Last weekend I tried out the Aerobatic Stunt Flying experience day, available at Red Letter Days here.

And what a day it was!

We arrived at Redhill in the morning, took a cab to the aerodrome which is about 5-10 mins away from the station. When we got there I filled out the necessary forms, and we were greeted by Andrew my pilot for the day who gave a quick briefing as to what was ahead.

We climbed into a Cessna High performance Aerobatic plane, which looked like a stripped out sports car in order to keep the plane light.

After a few minutes, we were in the air and climbing fast. Once we were away from the aerodrome, I got to fly the plane a bit which and was surprised at how sensitive the controls are, and how easily the plane can change direction.

And this is where the fun began! Andrew took the controls and ran me through his repertoire of stunts:
-Loop the loops
-Barrel Rolls
-Stalls, with rolls
-Cuban 8′s
-Reverse Cuban figure of 8′s

Each move was executed flawlessly, and was smooth as butter. I must admit I have never felt such a rush, and such pressure as when we were pulling 2-3G’s in these loops. Especially when we were chaining different moves together such as a Loop followed by a Barrel Roll!!

The experience lasted around 30 minutes from starting the engine to landing, and I can’t wait to have a go again!

I’ve always wanted to learn to dance, and my girlfriend has always nagged me for us to try a dancing course so I decided to go for a Salsa course!

The only problem is we don’t have much time, and its difficult to be able to commit to a day every week for 5-6 weeks between work and trips, so we opted for a 1 day intensive Salsa class.

The 1 day intensive is held at the Bar Salsa on Saturday morning, in Charring Cross London. The day starts at 10:30 and aims to finish at 5:30 – So it was going to be a long day!

The course is run by Alastair Sadler who is a very experienced english salsa dancer. It was nice to have an english teacher as Alastair had to learn just like us, and knew how to make us comfortable.

The course started off with an easy warm up, and then some simple exercises to get us thinking about the steps and timings. As the hours progressed, we were swapping partners and attempting bolder moves. By lunchtime, were practicing dance moves just like in a salsa club!

We got an hour for lunchtime, and opted to eat at the Bar Salsa brazilian buffet which serves some tasty dishes priced by weight. Food was fantastic, and we had a well deserved break!

Lunch over, it was time to practice some more dance moves and get back into the zone. Within hours we were confident and ready to go out to hit the Salsa clubs.

The day ended round 6, and Alastair invited us to stay the evening to practice our dancing. In all it was a really fun day, and we now regularly practice in our living room in anticipation for the next night out!

Overall the day passed very quickly, and was made really fun by Alastair’s witty sense of humour and the mood it created in the room. Every one was very nice, and we all got along really well. In terms of age groups it was fairly mixed, with couples and singles ranging from 20 to 65!

You don’t need exceptional fitness, as the day is well structured and there are plenty of rest stops where Alastair shows us moves to practice. Plus if you feel that you need more time to learn, you can re-do the course for free within 2 months which is really good. I think 4-5 in our group were there for a second time and they progressed really well.

In all was great fun, and is really recommended if you want to learn Salsa, or want to get started with a dance.
